Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most commonly diagnosed vertigo disease. BPPV is diagnosed by tracking the eye movements or nystagmus. We have developed fast 3D app for particle motion simulation through the three semicircular canals.
In particular, this tool, can be combined with a new hardware device (Oculus Rift), which gives a new opportunity for assessing and treating patients with BPPV. A feedback of the head position and a real time slow phase velocity analysis with positional testing and repositioning maneuvers will potentially a new device on the market. The app will use custom tracking technology to provide ultra-low latency 360° head tracking, velocity and acceleration. This technology can help the detection of BPPV as well its therapy because patient can do head movement with a specific software and get feedback about fluid rotation and membrane deflection in real time. A completely new 3D visualization tool developed during the EMBalance project will provide the ability to see the patient’s response from multiple locations in the room together with his vestibular three semi-circular canals.
Usage:
Tap to reset the starting position. Drag the slider to change the particle's velocity. Tap one of the three buttons to place the particle in appropriate anatomic plane.
This app is partly supported by the grant EC FP7 610454 EMBalance project.
